My seventh grade biology book, mixed with a few art supplies.

The female preying mantis kills the male as they are mating, then creates life from their act. The male is dead, but has done what he existed for in the first place.

In the same way, an artist's brush empties a tube of paint, leaving it a shell. But the brush then uses what the tube contained in order to create.

Mask

18 gauge galvanized wire, about 8 inches tall.

For IllustrationFriday.com. Mask was this weeks word to illustrate, and it was more challenging than I anticipated. Not from an idea standpoint, but simply creating it for some reason. Thanks for any comments in advance!

The Mosquito is finished!!

Well, these pics stink, but I'm kinda excited about being done (I think), and I wanted to post some images of her. The "A" on her dogtag is the last initial of the family who commissioned me to make her. Why do I know it's a female? 'Cause female mosquitos are the ones that bite!

The basketball is for scale (no, she doesn't play :) ).

Well, here's my first post on the big mosquito that I've been commissioned to make! All copper tubing, and I'm about 2 thirds done. Gotta finish the one wing and add some legs, but I'm gettin' there!

Invention

24 gauge dark annealed wire. Maybe 6 inches tall.
For Illustration Friday, this weeks word is "Invention". Don't know what this machine is supposed to do, but I bet it would be interesting.

Funny, scrolling through some of the other entries for this week, it seems boxes with funnels leading into 'em is a common idea for "invention". As you can see, it was what I thought of too. Just kind of interesting, like we all watched the same cartoons when we were young.

Strongman.

A couple of my wine corks and wire guys that I posed for Illustration Friday (www.illustrationfriday.com). It's a cool site, check it out sometime.

The theme word for this week (and this pic) is "ghost".

I got the go ahead from a client to make a giant mosquito yesterday. It'll be around 30'' high and wide, made of copper tubing. I made a herron in the same style last year, here a couple of pics of it. (Click on a pic to see it bigger)

As for the mosquito, I'll be showing the progress here in this blog in the near future.

An Applause Sign

Made this piece for a group show at LAMP Art Gallery in the fall of 2006. It's around 5 ft. long with eight 20wt. bulbs (one behind each letter). Bought by a private collector in Indianapolis (I've lost track of exactly who, bummer).

I've always thought applause signs were so strange, funny even. It's a cue to tell an audience in a studio when to clap, so that viewers at home will know what they should be appreciating. Wierd.
