What possible evolutionary purpose does the sprouting of long ear hair serve in older males? Anyone?

My friends over at d'Arte Board asked me to mention that they are having a little art contest starting today. No blue ribbon if you win, but they will feature your site, blog, or whatever. Go ahead, they're nice people... well, except for one guy, but he's mostly harmless.
