When My Lips Eclipse the Sun

It was hot this weekend. Hot for the first time this year, and all of a sudden the city just turned on. Chicagoans come out of hiding in the summer, and as the temperatures rise, people emerge from their seasonal cocoons and head to the lake (granted, I think there were just as many people out and about during the snowpocalypse, but that was different). Sunday was the first day when we felt as though that cocoon was worth leaving, and there were people, in droves, just being outside.

Someone asked me recently if Chicago is a friendly city. I paused, and said "no". People don't make eye contact much here, or greet you on the street, and there's not a big sense of friendliness among the population. I have to qualify my answer now, though, because what Chicago may lack in bubbly effervescence, it more than makes up for in communal identity. There's a sense of sticking things out, together, that Chicagoans embrace. We (I guess I'm a part of it now) are unified in some way, connected and bonded, together against (or with) the world. That was especially clear to me on Sunday. People were suddenly making eye contact with each other, and quietly, calmly, nodding in agreement about the beauty of the much-needed, and long-awaited, warm weather. We owned the day, as residents of the city, and enjoyed it together.

I spent most of the day wandering through the humidity, out to the lake, and along the lakeshore path. I noticed, as I walked, how different the lake shore looks this year than it has before. This winter has absolutely ravaged the shore of Lake Michigan, leaving giant slabs of concrete cracked and akimbo, and debris from the shore scattered along the coast. It's beautiful, in a way, and feels remote and abandoned, but it's also sad and a bit scary. Every time I've been out there since the weather turned, I think about what it must have been like to be right there on the shore when those winter storms rolled in. It's a poignant reminder of the power of nature. Chicago may be a huge city, with resources, and people, and a unified sense of self. But when the storms roll in, it's just a place, as vulnerable as any.

Parts of the lake shore are totally exposed to the city. You can see the buildings, hear the cars, and smell the exhaust from Lake Shore Drive. But parts are separated, isolated, protected (in part by the cracked concrete slabs, which, jutting up out of the lake just so create a man-made and nature-created barrier from the city). I found one of those spots on my Sunday walk. A little cove of rocks and algae and driftwood that, although I was literally throwing distance from the hundreds of bikers, runners, and families that were out that day, was completely removed from the noise and motion of the day. I explored my little area, took my shoes off and stuck my feet in the (freezing) cold water, and took a nap on a particularly welcoming rock. Laying there, I felt like I was adrift at the end of the world. All I could see was water, stretching out forever, and I forgot, for a moment, where I really was.

The day was beautiful. In all of the weekends in the past few months, I've felt that I needed a true break, a moment of relaxation and some time to recover from the speed and stress of my life. Each Monday I've felt a bit more tired, and each Friday I've been more ready for a few days off. All I needed, apparently, was an hour or two away from it all, lying on my perfect napping rock, and watching the gentle turquoise water roll through the rocks and nooks of the lake shore.

I'm Gonna See That You Be Back Home

C'est fin! Done and done. Thirty days really isn't all that long, and I think having some idea of my outfits ahead of time really helped me get through what is usually the roughest month of the year. There was not a single day when I woke up, having no clue what I was going to wear (this tends to put me in a foul mood). I felt organized, and put-together, during a month that I often begin to feel unhinged. So although some bloggers have bemoaned the fact that this challenge took place in the dregs of winter (and I empathize, I truly do), I think it was actually a bit of a blessing in disguise for me, lending structure and creativity to the last part of this seemingly never-ending season.

30/30

There's a very real feeling of satisfaction on completing this 30 for 30 challenge, even though, as I've mentioned before, it actually wasn't that difficult for me. I was really happy with each piece that I picked, and only one or two pieces ended up not being as versatile as I would have liked. I actually have at least a handful of other outfit ideas using these pieces, and I'm sure I'll be returning to many of them soon. There's something to be said for picking pieces that you love, because then you end up with a capsule wardrobe of your favorite things, and there's really no way to go wrong! Still, it feels kind of neat having 30 whole outfits, neatly organized and laid out in front of me. Like a visual representation of the past 30 days.

The final roundup! Each photo links to the original post.

It's cool seeing them all lined up like that! I don't know if I can pick a favorite, since I was actually really happy about almost every outfit. The ones that stand out to me do so because of the day I remember having while I wore it. Numbers 3, 11, 14, 17, and 22 were all some of the raddest days, so they stand out as winners to me. I have to give the MVP to my Target cowboy boots, since they were worn with 11 outfits, though the tan H&M cardigan is a close runner-up (and almost didn't make the cut at all!). I was also kind of surprised at how little I ended up using accessories to change up the outfits. I wore belts a lot, and scarves occasionally, but I really didn't feel like I needed to lean on accessories to get through the month, which I definitely thought I would need to do.

What are some of your favorite outfits and pieces? Did you participate in the 30 for 30? What did you think? Would you do it again? If you didn't participate, what are your thoughts on capsule wardrobe challenges (on the blog-o-sphere or in the non-Internet world)? What is the benefit of dressing from a small set of items? What is the drawback?

Taking Me Back Down the Road

First, thank you all so much for your wonderful, insightful, caring comments on yesterday's post. I knew I wasn't alone in my mini quarter-life crisis, of course, but it was reassuring and downright encouraging to hear that it is something that has happened to each of you as well. I've often thought that it's odd how much emphasis is placed on adolescence as the most difficult phase of growing up. It was difficult, to be sure, and awkward and terrifying and sometimes quite painful, but I think that your 20s can be just as confusing a time, especially because you're supposed to have it all "figured out" by then. Anyway, thank you so much for the kind words. They were just what I needed to hear. :)

Hop Czar

I'm really looking forward to this weekend. Though I won't be going to Texas for the Style Council Conference (sadface - last night I saw off Emily, Lisa and Merl, and it was both awesome - I'd not met the lovely Merl before, and the 30 seconds I got were as delightful as I'd imagined - and sad, since I wasn't able to join in on their fashionable road trip festivities to Austin), Joe will be in town, for a whole week, and I'm so looking forward to incorporating him into my routine for a few days. One of the hardest parts about living apart is not being with each other for the daily stuff, so I'm looking forward to having coffee together in the morning, cooking dinner in the evening, and just generally being around one another.

29/30

I'm really nearing the end of my 30 for 30 posts!! As I mentioned before, I actually finished doing the challenge last Friday, but ended up behind in posting. This is actually pretty normal. My posting schedule has become pretty solid, and I will almost always post daily on Monday-Friday (with some exceptions, of course). I tend to take the weekends off, though. I never used to, and the weekends were actually the time I used to spend most on the blog, but in the past 6 months or so I've transitioned away from that, and Saturday and Sunday have become more "unplugged". So though I did wear 30 outfits, for 30 days, with only 30 pieces of clothing, the posting schedule remained at five posts/week. Which is how I ended up seven days behind. It's a nice schedule to keep, most of the time, as it means that I can be flexible with outfit pictures on certain days, and I give myself some time to edit and prep pictures for each post. But it's a more pronounced delay with a challenge like this. Do you all keep a posting schedule? Do challenges like the 30 for 30, or Everybody, Everywear affect that? How do you navigate between those schedules/"deadlines"?
