Or It's Quiet

One of the reasons I love going to see Joe every weekend is this. Right out his front (and back!) door(s), there are seemingly endless woods and hills to walk through. And with each season, they become more and more magical to me. In summer, the lush greenery was overwhelming and intoxicating, and as the leaves browned and fell, I felt supremely cozy among the barren trees and rich, enveloping autumn colors. And now, with the snow and low northern winter sun, the woods have turned into a frozen landscape, alive but suspended in cold crystal flakes. In short, Joe lives in Narnia, and I have the distinct pleasure of getting to go through the wardrobe every week (plus, bonus: no witches!).

As rough as it has been to be so sick for so long (I'm not used to, nor do I appreciate, 6-day colds), it has given me (and by given I mean forced) the opportunity to just stop. We ran a single errand over the course of the weekend, and it involved stocking up on Sleepytime tea. I had plenty of time to think, and relax, and push aside my stresses, anxieties, and to-do lists for awhile, and actually start working on diminishing them altogether. We played cribbage, ate chicken noodle soup, slept, went through two boxes of tissues, watched Battlestar Galactica, the entire Matrix trilogy, and Food, Inc., and managed to entirely unplug from the world for a few days.

I'm getting ready to leave Joe's house this morning, and am heading back to the city. Every time I go between these two places, I feel like I'm moving between worlds. The claustrophobic activity of Chicago, it's magnificent (pun intended) energy and breathtaking skyline, are so drastically different than the calm, quiet world that I move into every weekend. There's no skyline here, and the energy is slower, more relaxed, content to just get through each week, without needing to be or do or have anything in particular. It's an energy that I feel like I'm striving for. I find it interestingly appropriate that right at a moment when I'm trying to slow myself down, find a rhythm and a center, is the exact moment that I'm transitioning from one, fast-paced, somewhat manic city, to another city, slower and more deliberate. Maybe in 2011 I'll leave Chicago in more ways than one.

Running in a...

I'm so appreciative, and so grateful, for all of your kind comments about my recent sentiments about simplification and living life with intention (of course, for those of you who aren't already big fans, you should probably be reading Jess's site too). I've found, in writing and thinking about it so much in the past few weeks, that one of the keys, for me, is to be constantly trying to remind myself of my goals. If those things are important to me, then it's important that I don't forget about them. So while I was standing out here in the snow, taking my pictures, I thought about the sun shining on me, and the magical Narnian world I was a part of, and lived entirely in the wonderful (albeit cold) wintry moment. The real challenge, I think, will be to take that attitude, and focus that energy, when I'm at my desk, or doing dishes, or folding laundry. I want to make the mundane marvelous. Too big a goal? Probably, but it's worth a shot, no?

A Pair of Lovers

(as I look at this again, it looks like it could be photoshopped, but as usual- not!)

I have an exhibition of Bent Objects images now at the University of Indianapolis. Jan. 17 - Feb. 11.
For more info look here .
The artist's reception thingy (no invitation needed) will be this Friday, January 21st, from 4 until 6 (but I'll probably be around there until a bit later). I think the timing of the reception is mainly for the students, but I hope my friends and blog followers stop in if they're nearby. As an added attraction, I've forgone the usual wine and cheese table for something more enjoyable on the sugar scale. I already get enough wine and cheese, I can assure you.

Laundry Day: Two Miles to Go

Whiteout
I know you've seen this one before, but I love it, and it's fairly representative of today's weather conditions.

It's snowy. I've decided not to brave the icy, low-visibility roads today, so I'm semi-stranded at Joe's until tomorrow morning. Joe and I spent most of the weekend curled up on the couch, blowing our collective noses and shivering under some blankets (yup, he caught my cold), so I'm pretty sure that's what's in the works for today as well. Wish me luck and chicken soup, and I'll see you fools on the flip side.

Client Corner ~ Daniela

Gals,
Ya know it never gets old opening an email from a happy bride who takes the time to stop by and share her wedding photos with us. Most of the time we send out packages worldwide and wave them off for good, but every now and again a sweet client will pay us a visit and share their magical day with us. It's an awesome feeling to see one of our boleros on a real life bride on the other side of the world!!! Nothing like that feeling. :)

Daniela is one such gal, who recently got in touch to share her magical day with us. We were absolutely delighted to see her pics in our inbox this week and it really took the edge off a tricky week. I think you will agree that Daniela and her handsome hubby look absolutely beautiful in their pictures! Daniela truly makes a stunning Bride!!

We wish them both a magical journey through life together.

Walk On
Striped shirt: harvested from Emily's closet * Pants: thrifted * Cardigan: UO * Pumps: UO * Belt: thrifted * Necklace: gift from college roomie

Ugh. I am sick today, y'all. I went to bed last night with a somewhat scratchy throat, and woke up this morning with a full-on winter cold. Stuffy nose, puffy eyes, nasty cough: the works. I'm frustrated about it, especially since I've been literally going to bed at 8:45 this week, drinking Emergen-C everyday, and drinking loads of water. What's a girl gotta do to stay healthy?

So it's a short one today. I'll leave you with the awesomeness that are these high-waisted pants. But first, a question: are you a stay-home-when-you're-sick kind of person, or do you power through and go to work anyway? I'm one of the people who goes in, at first, and then feels like death and goes home halfway through the day. I think this is probably the least ideal way to do it, since I'm still contaminating everyone at work, and I'm not really getting the rest I need. Anyway, if any of you have any surefire tricks to get rid of a nasty cold, and fast, toss 'em my way. My tissue box will appreciate it (and Joe probably won't mind, either).

But I Send My Best

All's Fair (Isle)...
Fair isle sweater: H&M * Sweater-dress: Nordstrom Rack * Tights: We Love Colors (charcoal) * Socks: Target * Boots: Target * Necklace: Ride to Fight Cancer

I think it's safe to say that I'm obsessed with this sweater. I love the softness, the fair isle pattern, the cropped length, and the cozy cowl. Oh, and the price tag ($9!). It's safe to say that this might be the sweater of the 2010-11 winter. Honestly, this has got to be the most comfortable outfit ever. All kinds of loose, cozy knits. And I'm adoring how functional these boots are in the snow and ice. As much as I love my chunky snow boots, I'm happy to be able to wear shoes that are a bit more fashion-friendly (or at least ones that I don't have to change out of once I get to work).

All's Fair (Isle)...

Thank you all again for your kindness after yesterday's posts (see here and here). I mostly try to keep things upbeat on here, but I'm also not one to write what I'm not feeling, so posts like those will come up every now and then. While this is a "fashion" blog (though "fashionable" I am not, and I really tend to think of it more as a daily style blog), I am finding myself identifying it more and more as just a daily "____" blog. I'm not looking to redefine it, but I'm not sure that daily outfit posts are all I want to do here. I'm planning various levels of expansion, exploration, and exposition that might leave behind the mold of daily style posts now and again. And I'm so excited for that! Between Laundry Days is almost two years old, which just boggles my mind, and I think it's time for it to get fully into the terrible twos and embrace some mayhem.

All's Fair (Isle)...

All's Fair (Isle)...

That being said, these will be incremental changes. I'll still do lots of daily outfit posts, since that's how this whole rollercoaster started, and that's what opened the door to the blogging community for me. There are a few guest posts that I have in the works, and a few new BLD features that I'm hoping to get off the ground. But again, in the interest of simplification and centering my life, these will happen slowly, when I'm ready, and when I have the time, creativity, and motivation to give each of them my all. For now, happy Wednesday. :)
