A hectic Week!

Gals
What a week and its only just Monday so far.

We took a trip to Kilkenny at the weekend to visit the new boutique "Smoking Lily" on Kieran's St. It's going to be an absolutely intriguing style haven with a mixture of treasures all under the one roof. Stylista boutique owner Shona has a vision for her boutique with different areas showcasing, fashion exchange (where you can consign with Shona and bring in all your hidden fashion gems gathering dust in your wardrobe), an exclusive Vintage den, where Irish Vintage Brand "Perk Up" will keep you stocked up on stunning glamour from yesteryear, different sections dedicated to select Irish Designer and featuring yours truelly. Yes it's official gals, we are going to have our very first featured presence in a brick and mortar store! So now there will be a bonzie vendor where you can go and pick up a piece for your own wardrobe.

We will be stocking up on tatter tees, bags, accessories and much more over the coming weeks in anticipation for the offical launch at the end of the month. Hope to see you guys there. :)

ps. bring a smile, Shona is a doll and loves company!

Tomorrow Night my father will be launching his Photographic Exhibition in Cahir, Co.Tipperary so I am really looking forward to attending and blogging about that. I have already seen a few samples for the showcase and I was blown away by the pictures so far. Will keep you posted on how that goes. :) (ps. good luck Dad!!!, so proud of you!)

Friday Night I'm heading out to my pal Caz's theatre show in Waterford by Push Pull productions. Caz won a competition last year for scriptwriting and this weekend sees her play come to fruition in a gorgeous theatre venue in the City.

Saturday Night we are heading to Kilkenny for the launch of our pal Blainnead Hennessey's new commerical photographic studio "Shutterbug". An absolutely stunning venue for fashion/editorial/commercial photography run by brother and sister Blainnead ( Irish Interiors Writer and StyleBitches.com fame) and Eoin (Professional Irish Photographer).

Sunday Night ( this particular one is on a bank holiday so nobody has work on Monday) however I'm just pooped writing about this weeks shindigs, I can't imagine being up for a night out on Sunday too, however you never know how the weekend shapes up.

All this and a collection to be working on too, not to mention a very exciting project on the way!! More about that soon. :) Well a girls gotta keep busy. xxx

Ahh, I love a good three-day weekend. It's Monday, but I'm not at work. I'm not at work! In fact, I'm not even at my computer! Nope. This is a scheduled post. I'm out, in the sunshine (I hope), hanging out with Joe on our day off together. I'm kind of a big fan of this weekend, and there's no way I'm gonna gonna waste my third day off inside. What have you done this weekend? Any holiday barbecues? Camping trips? Street fairs? To me, Memorial Day weekend always marks the beginning of summer (the same way that Labor Day weekend ends it), and I can't help but start getting excited for all the summertime activities that are sure to come in the next few months!

IMG_5307IMG_5303

This is one of my favorite easy weekend outfits. Jeans? Check! Stripes? Check! Comfy flats? Check! Favorite yellow cardigan? Check and check! Joe and I spent the evening hanging out with Emily and some other friends, and this was perfect for drinking red wine and homebrews, eating chocolate chips (with sea salt on top - holy good gravy, those were good, good cookies), and enjoying impromptu "safety dance" dance parties. Good times.

Named after my daughter's cat, maker of tumbleweeds of hair which roll around our wooden floors, and is the reason we have a hard time wearing dark colored clothing nowadays.

Yeah, so happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone!! I am so ready for this three day-er. Seriously. Remember that stack of paperwork I told you about on Monday? Well, at about 4:18 yesterday afternoon, I finally finished it all. I was out of that office so fast. I could not be more happy that it is Saturday. And I don't even mind that I have a work thing to go to this afternoon, because I can wear jeans, eat watermelon, and play with my boss's kids. Life is good when your Saturday afternoon is comprised of beer, barbecue, and taking about giant squids with 5-year-olds. It's gonna be good, y'all. It's gonna be good.

I played pretty much no part in coming up with the idea for this outfit. Granted, there's not much of an idea there anyway, since it's just glorified jeans and a t-shirt, but I snagged the double-scarf idea from this month's issue of Lucky mag. I've been getting the magazine for awhile, and I love reading it and looking at the glossy pictures of pretty things, but I finally took the time this month to bookmark things that I wanted to try. I refused to bookmark anything that had components that I would have to purchase in order to try the look, so it's now filled with bookmarks of ideas for outfits using things that I already have. I'm trying really hard to cut back on my spending recently, so I'm doing everything I can to get inspiration for how to use what I already have. So far so good!

I'd like to remind everyone that June 21st is S.O.S.A.D.( Strangely Orange Snack Appreciation Day). It will be here soon, so stock up on your favorite orange food and beverages to share with those close to you.
You can even stop by the S.O.S.A.D. Facebook page if you feel like it.

Isn't it Sweet Being Unique?

IMG_4958
Silk blouse: thrifted * Pants: Michael Kors, remixed * T-straps: Clarks, remixed * Porcupine quill earrings: hand-me-down from my mom, remixed

I thrifted this shirt a few months ago. I was drawn to its fabric, silk and luxurious, and its unique cut. I actually wore it immediately after I bought it, with an olive pencil skirt, my red chevron tights, and these same earrings, but somehow missed actually taking a picture of that outfit. I've been meaning to recreate the whole look, but it's gotten too warm for tights in Chicago, so I had to alter things a bit. Plus, I've been really leaning towards pants lately. I love skirts and dresses, partly because of how versatile (not to mention pretty!) that they are, but there's something to be said for the undeniable comfort of a pair of pants. Anyway, I'm not really sure how this shirt is supposed to be worn. It's really loose on top, with these crazytown sleeves that taper at the forearm (I wear them pushed up to my elbow to create a sort of balloon effect), and it's also tapered through the hip. It's really kind of a mystery to me, but a classy, comfortable, silky mystery that I love. It's like the murder mystery party of mysteries; fun, and not scary at all.

IMG_4981IMG_4973

Also, lots of you asked about my earrings the last time I wore them, so I made sure to get a close up today. They're made of a combination of seed beads and porcupine quills. Apparently, my grandmother (my dad's mom) bought them for my mom years ago. My mom gave them to me, and even though I don't wear them a ton (they seem very flashy, and they're pretty long), I love that they remind me of two generations of women in my family. They're very much in the style of jewelry and art that my grandmother loved, so they remind me of her. And with these particular earrings, I love that they were given by my grandmother to my mom, because then they remind me of her, too. I've talked about this in more length before, but I truly love having pieces of jewelry, clothing, or art that remind me of my loved ones. It can be hard, for sure, to be reminded of someone who is gone, but it's also so wonderful. To me, wearing, or even just seeing, these earrings brings back, in vivid authenticity, the feelings and memories and stories that my grandmother and I shared. I get to take her into my day, into the sometimes trivial moments in my life during which I wouldn't otherwise think of her.

Back on Home Turf

Gals,
What an adventure!!! I'm back from my girls trip to Vegas , needless to say there was all sorts of shenanigans, none of which quite make it through the blog filter so we shall say it was a wonderful experience and one which I won't be forgetting anytime soon. :)

There's a few tumbleweeds sweeping through the blog at the moment as I have been busy this week catching up on orders and correspondence. I got back to a few lovely emails from clients who have been busy rocking their bonzie pieces out and about. I'm gonna post the pics over the rest of the week to share them with you too.
The first of those to hit our inbox and bring a smile into our day was our gorgeous bride Carolina who recently married her sweetheart and chose a bonzie Venetian wrap to compliment her gown. I love the couture look of the overall ensemble and I absolutely adore this picture, what a gorgeous couple!

Congrats to Carolina and her handsome new hubbie!

The Greenness Comes from a Window

IMG_4945
Striped tunic: Sears, remixed * High-waist sailor jeans: Kenneth Cole Reaction, remixed * Blazer: Ann Taylor, remixed * Booties: Payless, remixed * Oak Leaf Necklace: available at Objects Found

So every year that I live in Chicago, I forget about how unbelievably green it gets during the spring and summer. Winter is so dreary and gray, and although autumn is colorful, it doesn't have the vibrant verdancy (yes, "verdancy" is a word. It means "greenness", according to Merriam Webster. And yes, this is the second day in a row that I've talked about etymology on this blog) that spring and summer have. There's just something so alive about this particular shade of green; perhaps it's because it is the shade of green that indicates that things are just starting to grow again and cast off the deadly shackles of winter (my, I'm getting verbose in this post!). In any case, I love the color of this time of year.

IMG_4943IMG_4941

It's also the perfect color scheme for wearing subdued neutrals. Had I worn this particular outfit in winter, I would have positively blended into my surroundings. But the washed-out colors of this tunic and blazer just pop against the vast greenness of the park. I like how the dark pants mirror the tree trunks, too (yes, I am putting altogether too much thought into how this all goes together). In any case, I'm a big fan of this outfit for the way that it complements my surroundings. It doesn't hurt that it is one of the comfiest combinations ever, either. Although it's warm as can be in Chicago this week, my office is cool and air conditioned, so I appreciate having another layer, and this blazer is perfect. It's actual part of a two-piece skirt suit, and while I've worn the suit as a whole a few times, I've gotten much more mileage out of each piece separately. I've loved getting more wear out of my suit jackets now that blazers are so trendy as casual layering pieces. Do you guys wear your suits as separates?

Swimming in a Fish Bowl

IMG_5089
Dress: courtesy of eShakti * Scarf: thrifted * Tights: We Love Colors (maroon), remixed * Clogs: Swedish Hasbeens, remixed * Bag: vintage Kenneth Cole, remixed

This outfit was actually worn just before the current heat wave hit Chicago. I really hate not posting outfits on the day that I wore them, but I'm a little bit behind right now, so there may be a few out-of-sequence posts until I get all caught up. Anyway, back to the matter at hand. Can we all agree to give Joe a big round of applause for these beautiful photos? I think he perfectly captured the essence of the day; overcast, muggy, and just a bit like a magical fairyland (p.s. I love how the spellchecker on Blogger tells me that the word "fashionista" is wrong but is fine and dandy with the word "fairyland"). We went on our usual after-work walk on Friday and were so taken with the misty, mythical quality of the park and lakefront. After tinkering with the color settings on my camera a bit, I think we ended up with some really nice shots. And I absolutely adore the fact that these were all taken within the Chicago city limits. Betcha didn't know Cook County was so green and nice, huh? (p.s. Apparently, "betcha" is a word, too!)

IMG_5113
IMG_5108IMG_5118
How awesome are these prints?!!?!

A few other bloggers have already sung the praises of eShakti, an online dress boutique that creates gorgeous frocks in a plethora of prints and styles, made exactly to your body's measurements. I was really excited when the approached me to offer a custom-made dress to review (for those of you who are interested, you can find this dress here). I'm absolutely crazy about the gold fish print on the fabric, and it truly does fit me like a glove. In the interest of full disclosure, I did have my tailor bring up the hem a few inches. It originally hit my legs mid-calf, which isn't the most flattering (though, it stands to be mentioned that Joe loved it at that length), but I think I'll get loads of wears out of it now that it hits just above the knee. Anyway, the rest of it fits like a dream. Makes sense, I guess, since it was quite literally made for me.

This really was one of my favorite outfits for a long time. I've felt like I've been in a bit of a rut for awhile, and this ensemble totally pulled me out of it. I think it's the changing seasons that is kind of throwing me off. But I feel newly inspired, and can't wait to wear this dress, these Hasbeens, and my new favorite floral scarf throughout Chicago's heatstroke-inducing summer.

Whispered Nonsense into Your Radio

IMG_5038
Burgundy tank top: Old Navy, remixed * Railroad boyfriend jeans: Gap * Scarf; Target, remixed * Wedges: American Eagle * Quartz necklace: Noble Town Vintage

Y'all, this is going to be a bat-shit crazy week. It's like a gazillion degrees out in Chicago, I have literal stacks of paperwork to do, we still have no Internet at home, and I desperately want to go to the beach. So I'm leaving you with a short, sweet, Monday post, with my new FAVE pants and what will surely become my hot-weather uniform this summer (note: I definitely ditched the scarf once I realized that it was over 90 degrees and humid as balls).

p.s. Sorry for the naughty language in this post.
p.p.s. Sorry for the second in-a-row outfit shot taken in my dining room. When it's 90 and I'm at the beach on a Sunday, I don't really feel like settin' up the tripod. Plus, this way you see me pre-sweaty disaster.

Around My Shoulders

IMG_4662
Shirt: Urban Outfitters * Cigarette pants: The Mexican Shop, remixed * Two-tone brogues: Urban Outfitters, remixed * Earrings: DIY

So first of all, sorry about the relative radio silence lately. We have had pretty regular internet issues lately, which means I haven't really had the chance to post, read blogs, or comment as much as I'd like. Hopefully things will be sorted out in about a week, but I might be a bit distant until then. Forgive me? Okay!

IMG_4665

I love this outfit. Since I'm still crazy about stripes, this tunic is probably my favorite thing ever. It fits great, and I love the way it goes with so much in my wardrobe. I can tell it's going to be a staple throughout the summer. And of course, I had to wear my fave brogues. This ended up being a great casual outfit for a very busy Friday. Things at work have been pretty non-stop lately, so I'm really relieved that the weekend is here. I have big plans to tidy up the apartment, do some reading, and make dinner and watch Avatar with Joe (hey, do you guys like that every weekend I seem to list a whole bunch of housekeeping tasks that I have to do? Awesome, right?). What are your plans this weekend? Anything exciting or are you staying in?

Black knit shirt: Old Navy, remixed * Olive tank top: Target * Chambray skirt: Anthropologie * T-strap flats: Urban Outfitters, remixed * Quartz necklace: Noble Town Vintage * Belt: Forever 21, remixed

So I'm jumping on the whole denim/chambray trend train. Jumping all the way on. Like, I'm thinking about becoming a hobo (complete with patches and knapsack), and traveling cross-country on the train. I might switch to the striped trend train somewhere along the way. All I know is that I'm on board with chambray. I mean, seriously. This shit is comfortable. And it goes with everything! I was hugely happy with this outfit, but I think that happiness is 67% chambray, 24% awesome quartz necklace, and 9% bare legs (that does add up to 100%, right?).

IMG_4788

And lo! The sun is out, the birds are chirping, the trees are magnificently green. Is it spring? Is it wishful thinking? Am I pushing my luck just thinking that the Chicago weather might turn around? Stay tuned later this week to find out the answers to these and other pressing questions!

(what is up with my mood today? I feel like I've been a total dork all day!)

I'll Just Keep it to Myself

IMG_4920

Guys, what is up with the gloomy spring weather? Cloudy, gray, drizzly, windy, downright cold; these things do not a happy Clare make. So I'm going to bide my time this afternoon/evening making yet another list of reasons I'm excited for the warmer weather to waft my way.
  • Shorts. All lengths, all styles. With heels, flats, tunics, hats.
  • Going to the Saturday Farmer's Market with Joe and buying veggies galore (hello, golden beets!)
  • Outdoor music. Free outdoor music. Free She & Him concert.
  • Swimming in Lake Michigan. Granted, this won't happen until late July, but it still rocks.
  • A trip to Colorado that doesn't involve breaking my arm.
  • Light jackets for breezy evenings in the city.
  • Summer weddings. I already have a dress picked out for one in August!
  • Longer daylight, shorter work week.
  • Camping, and weekend trips to Michigan, the Twin Cities, Madison, and Indy. Ahoy, friends and family! Here we come!
  • Reorganizing the furniture in our bedroom (this is a weird necessity for me when the seasons change).
  • "Summer dinners" (fresh fruit, veggies, mozzarella, and homebrews - we have a petite saison d'ete right now that is taaassttyy).
What's on the docket for you as the seasons change? Have you already had a taste of summer or are you, like us Chicagoans, patiently (or not-so-patiently) waiting for the sun to warm away the cold-weather blues?

As I'm Walking Away

IMG_5041
White lace t-shirt: thrifted * High-rise indigo skinny jeans: Gap * Jazz shoes: Seychelles, remixed * Necklace: gift from Gina of clothes, inter alia * Watch: Forever 21, remixed

Ah, Monday. I desperately, desperately wanted to sleep in this morning, drink coffee with Joe and snuggle up for an epic movie marathon (I was leaning towards all three LOTR movies, but I'm not picky. I would have been happy with anything over 2 1/2 hours and featuring majorly overdone battle sequences). That was not on the docket, however. Maybe for Memorial Day. I think I can wait a couple of weeks...

Anyway, this is actually what I wore yesterday. Remember those awesome Sunday plans I mentioned having? Well, yesterday I met up with my buddy Emily (of Sartoriography, a super-rad Chicago-based style blog) to do some wandering, photo-taking, thrifting, and eating (seriously, any outing with me must involve food. This is non-negotiable). Anyway, we had an awesome time, got lots of sweet loot for super cheap, and explored a sweet new part of Chicago.

IMG_5054IMG_5044IMG_5050

Yeah, so how perfect is this photoshoot location?? It can be really hard to find unoccupied green space in Chicago. I go to the lake shore pretty often to take my photos, but I always want to find good spots in the city to take pictures. I'm far too chicken to do downtown shots the way that Gina does (plus, I'm very rarely in the Loop, so that wouldn't be too practical anyway). But Emily and I found the best little hill over by a fave thrift shop, complete with perfect city skyline in one direction and fabulously proletarian factory in the other. Also complete with delinquent teenagers (you can see them jumping around on the concrete in the background), but let's just pretend that they're not there, 'kay? Anyway, Emily and I had the most fun taking pictures up here, despite the mad gusts of wind that kept threatening to choke me with my own necklace.

IMG_5042IMG_5057
Gah! Look how excited we are!

It was seriously such a great Sunday, and I felt so cool and comfortable in my outfit (also a bit like I should join a '50s street gang with my rolled up pants and crisp white shirt, snappin' my way through the neighborhood). I love this lace overlay t-shirt, and I was really happy how it came together with the high-rise jeans and gold necklace. My work is pretty laid-back and casual, and we don't really have much of a dress code, but I hesitate to wear jeans to the office anyway, so I have to take what I can get over the weekend. My boss is always pretty put-together, but my coworkers wear jeans, sneakers, sandals, etc. It seems fine, but I have a bit of a mental barrier with my work wardrobe. I need to have a sartorial division between the different parts of my life. If I wore jeans and sneakers to work, I would never feel the wonderful satisfaction of wearing jeans on the weekend. In any case, it was really nice wearing jeans yesterday, and I'm already thinking of other outfits to put together around these high-rise skinnies.

What about you? Do you have a work vs. play wardrobe? Is it required by your office dress code, or are your regulations self-imposed?

Okay, I'm going to keep this short and sweet because I have big fun Sunday plans today. Even though it's been a bit on the chilly side in Chicago lately, the sun has been out all weekend, and I'm trying to take full advantage of the beautiful weather. Yay sunshine!! I'm still on a major high from all the Dress Your Best Week posts...it was so wonderful to read about everyone's favorite things about themselves, and I totally want to try to make every week a little bit more like DYBW. We should all be celebrating our bodies and our beauty everyday, not just one week a year, so I'm going to try to incorporate those good thoughts into my everyday attitude. Here are some of my favorite DYBW posts (and seriously, it took me so long to narrow it down to these! Everyone's posts were just so incredible and inspiring):

Bananas At Bedtime

 Let's Slip Into Bed Together.
.

The Sun Comes Shining Through

IMG_4629
Green sweater: Old Navy, remixed * Mustard skirt: thrifted, remixed * Boots: Ciao Bella, remixed * Necklace: DIY/birthday present from my parents!

Guys, I can't believe that Dress Your Best Week is almost over! This has been the most unbelievably inspiring week. It's been amazing to read everyone's posts and the massive amount of self-love that is flowing through the internet right now is just contagious! I think Chelsea said it best,
I don't feel envious or jealous or insecure reading why others love their bodies, even if they're different from mine... instead I'm filled with awe, appreciation, and inspiration! For the women whose favorite parts I can relate to (being tall, small waisted, large-calved, for example), I am gaining more love for my own parts that sometimes I overlook. For those celebrating aspects of their bodies that are completely different than mine (being petite, dainty feet, piercing eyes), my own definition of beauty is expanding and evolving and I'm becoming more aware of how beautiful we all are in our own ways, and how I can unabashedly admire someone else's different physical traits, without coveting them or feeling inadequate when comparing them to mine.
So, for my final day of this wonderful week, I've decided to talk about two parts of my body that I love.

4. My hair
5. My mouth/smile

...now, both may seem small at first, but these are two majorly important parts of what makes me me.

IMG_4630IMG_4645

For a very, very long time, my hair was long. Long and curly and thick and fun. Think along the lines of S. at Academichic or Mary of Undergrad Fab...big, unruly, but gorgeous hair. And I loved it when it was long. It was so versatile. When I wanted to feel more polished and professional, I'd straighten it. I'd let it stay long and wild when my bohemian side was stronger. Pulling it up into a funky, curly updo always made me feel unbearably sexy. So when I cut it short, I realized that the versatility that I had grown so accustomed to was gone. Now I don't have a lot of options in terms of what I do with my hair. It just is what it is. And that's why I adore it so much, now. Because it lets my personality speak for itself. I don't get to change who I am with my hair anymore. I am Clare, un-apologetically, and no amount of product can change that now. Plus, pixie cuts are damn cute.

In the same vein, I adore my mouth and smile. I have these wonderfully full, sexy lips, and I've always been so proud of my mouth. Joe wanted me to talk about my smile this week. He said that it was the best part of me, the part that truly communicated who I am. But he also said that it would be hard to show just how great it is, because it's the development of the smile, the movement of my mouth, the growing joy, that makes it so wonderful. He said that it was the transformation from non-smile to smile that makes my smile so magical. So, in lieu of posting a video of me smiling (not gonna happen), you'll just have to take my word for it. I have a wonderful smile, a smile that truly shows me, at my best.

IMG_4618

p.s. Can we all just take a minute to ooh and aah at this necklace???!? My parents gave me the dragonfly bead for my birthday, and Joe and I took an awesome expedition to a bead shop in Old Town for me to assemble the rest. I love the outcome!!
