Oh man. I'm really sorry I keep doing this to you guys, but I have another massive post for today. I promise to be light on words to make up for the metric crap-ton of photos that are about to bombard your eyes. Look away if you don't like seeing tons of win.
As I mentioned on Friday, I wasn't able to go see Joe this weekend, so I ventured out of town to Milwaukee to visit my best bud. He, his girlfriend, and their cats were all lovely hosts, and we had a rad time eating our way through the town (those of you who have been reading Between Laundry Days for awhile should know that eating my way through things is pretty much how I roll).
Our first stop was on Friday, where Dave and I spent part of the afternoon drinking tasty brews (hey, they ain't called the Brewers for nothin'!) and chatting about life. One thing I love about visiting new cities is trying out the local beers. We get some Lakefront Brewery beers in Chicago, but not the specialty ones, so it was fun sampling a bit of the local flavor. Then we had some Unibroue, which is decidedly not local, but patently delicious. We followed up by cooking seriously delicious chicken peanut stew (try it, I dare ya. It'll make your heart sing).
Saturday morning was spent at Sil's. We had gone when I was in town last summer, and I fell in love with the delicious tiny donuts. I'd consider moving to Milwaukee for multiple reasons, but chief among them would have to be Sil's donuts. The tasty bags are full of hot bites of heaven. They also make fantastic coffee for a drive-through donuttery. We thought about eating outside, but it was too damn cold, so we snarfed in the car. Nom.
We spent much of Saturday wandering through thrift stores, board game stores (where I got too overwhelmed by options and couldn't buy anything), and the humane society (where we got to ooh and aah at some adorable critters). And then, and then, we went to Koppa's. And my life was given meaning again.
The place was insane. There was a lobster in a tank, which had been rescued from a grocery store. The sandwich-maker guy complimented my camera. They sold fluffernutter sandwiches and had the weirdest effing decor of any grocery store I've ever seen in my damn life. Between the stuffed animals and free Atari play station, I found the mecca of sandwiches. I really can't even go into how good it was, because I wouldn't do it justice, but suffice to say that Dave and I were in sandwich heaven for a good hour or so after eating.
Anyway, it was a weekend of fun, and lots and lots of food. I'm still a bit uncomfortable from all the eating, but I'll happily do it again the next time I'm in town. I love tiny spontaneous trips, little mini ones, where there's nothing particular on the agenda and hours of wandering is perfectly acceptable. We meandered into record stores, golf courses, and deserted streets (seriously, nothing in the Wauk opens until noon on the weekend. I think it's because everyone is still really hungover), and chatted about bad radio, career choices, environmentalism, the union/government standoff in Wisco, and television's obsession with reporting the weather (among other things). Milwaukee is a lot of things (those things being mostly drunk dudes of all ages), but one thing that it definitely is is a place full of good friends and great eats.
