Okay, first and most importantly, I am giving major props to the gorgeous Hillary of byHillary for giving me the idea and wonderful inspiration of utilizing my local library for my photoshoots. Please please, if you haven't already gaped at her awesome outfits, fun poses, and adorable cats, go over to her blog to ogle. If you already love Hillary, go love her some more!!!
Even though I started my new job last week, the new staff orientation was scheduled for today. It was actually kind of nice, because I had already kind of gotten my bearings at the office and was more prepared for today's information sessions. Another perk was getting a complimentary messenger bag (perfect for carrying lunch and my work shoes), unlimited cups of coffee, and gummi worms (why gummi worms? I have no idea, but a small bag of them was happily nestled in my messenger bag). A few of you have asked about what exactly this new job is. I'm doing student services and clerical work at one of the administration offices on campus. I want to go into higher education administration as a career, so this is a great step, and everyone in my office is young, forward-thinking, excited, and so smart and nice, so it's a really wonderful environment.
I desperately love this dress, but I also loathe it. It's one of those items in my wardrobe that I can never quite find a great way to wear it, but that I know I'll never throw it out. I love the discreet pattern, the silky fabric, the lovely neck/backline, and the drop-waist design, but I hate the way it actually fits me. The side zipper bulges, the sleeves are an unflattering design, the length isn't quite right, and there's simply too much fabric around my mid-section, giving the illusion of more bulk than is actually there, which is never good. If I had even an inkling of sewing know-how, I'd try to alter it to suit my needs, but all I can typically muster is a pretty shoddy pants hem, so I hesitate to even try. What would you do with a dress like this? Keep it? Give it away? Set it in the "to-be-altered" pile, knowing full well it may never happen?
This relatively new Forever 21 taupe jacket has been so great this summer. It's a really light material and so perfect for the transition from hot outside to air-conditioned office. I also like how structured it is, and how it lends just enough edge to whatever it is paired with. My accessories today keep with the very neutral feel of this whole outfit (I get to my qualms with the dress below). I added a leaf pendant and a homemade ring to the lengthened anchor necklace, and then layered the whole thing over the short necklace I was wearing yesterday. I really like the result. The bottom of the long necklace is busy and confused, but I feel like the length of the chain and the simplicity of the choker lend elegance to the look.
